Every detail of the Rijksmuseum digitally captured

The Rijksmuseum is one of the leading objects in the Netherlands. It is a monumental building and a tourist attraction. The management of the Rijksmuseum is therefore also a high priority. Here it is important that every detail is properly recorded and inspected. That is why the Rijksmuseum, together with its permanent maintenance partner Koninklijke Woudenberg, has digitally recorded the entire building in Aespect.

Unique level of detail

The data from the Rijksmuseum consists of LiDAR, photography from the ground and photography from the air. With this data, a 3D tiled model of the entire Rijksmuseum was developed in Aespect. Then all building parts were digitally extracted and Koninklijke Woudenberg performed digital inspections. By combining the software and the extracted data into a 3D-tiled model in Aespect, the building was digitized to millimeter accuracy.

"We have never seen this level of detail at this scale before" - Ewout Heuker,Head of Asset Management & Engineering Rijksmuseum

Greater insight

After completion of the 3D model, new insights emerged at the Rijksmuseum. For example, the accurate digitization of the building ensures that any misalignment or subsidence can be monitored and the data can be used as evidence when applying for permits, for example. In addition, the idea arose to also record the inside of the Rijksmuseum and turn it into a digital tour. All possibilities that can be realized with our software.
